Tamil nouns (and pronouns) are classified into two super-classes (திணை) - the "rational" (உயர்திணை), and the "irrational" (அஃறிணை). Humans and deities are classified as "rational", and all other nouns (animals, objects, abstract nouns) are classified as irrational.
திணை என்னும் சொல்லுக்கு "ஒழுக்கம்" என்று பொருள்.
